The Municipality of Tripoli book exhibition website, a public-sector cultural platform built for a heavy content load and a traffic spike around the event itself. My first government project.
About the client
The Municipality of Tripoli handles local governance and the city’s cultural programme, including public events like the book exhibition this site was built for.
Project Overview
The site was the main public face of the municipality’s book exhibition: the programme, the participating authors, schedules and the cultural events around it.Content-heavy is the defining constraint. A lot of editorial material, arriving over time, read by a general public with every level of technical confidence. So the information hierarchy did most of the work. Somebody’s grandmother should be able to find when a particular author is speaking, on a phone, without a tutorial.Public sector also means the traffic is spiky. It is quiet for weeks and then everyone arrives at once when the exhibition opens. WordPress and MySQL, with the architecture sized for the peak rather than the average.This was the first official website I delivered for a government organisation, and it changed how I work. Formality, accessibility and factual accuracy carry more weight when the publisher is a public authority. You cannot ship an approximate opening time.
The Challenge
Public-sector expectations and modern web practice do not always agree. The site had to look like something people want to use, while carrying the credibility and structure an official municipal platform is held to.The other half was operational. Large volumes of content, performance under peak load, and an editing experience municipal staff could use without calling a developer. That last one decides whether a public-sector site is still accurate a year later.
My Contribution
Full-stack, and I built it from the ground up: WordPress architecture, content models, and the custom features a cultural event needs.The part I spent most effort on was the editing experience. Municipal staff had to be able to update exhibition information, schedules and announcements themselves, because a site that needs a developer for a schedule change stops being correct very quickly.I worked directly with municipal stakeholders throughout, turning what an organisation like that needs into something that also behaves like a modern website.
